ATHENS — The late Kevin O’Sullivan was a family man, an educator and a runner, among many other things, during his life. So, it was appropriate that his family and friends gathered Saturday at the Concord University track to celebrate his life and raise money for a scholarship fund set up in his memory.
“There were 92 Irish runners and walkers competing in the 5k run, 3K walk and 800 meter fun run. This fun family oriented Irish theme event brought participates and volunteers from four states including West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Texas,” Colin O’Sullivan, Kevin’s son and on of the organizers of the event, said.”
Overall results saw Devin O’Sullivan, grandson of Kevin, win both the overall event and the men’s 5-K run with a time of 20:07.9, followed by Paul Pennington at 22:10.1 and Chris Parrish at 23:29.3.
The women’s 5-K run was won by Erica Morgan with a time of 23:35.8, followed by Sarah Harris at 24:10.9 and Betsy Conaway at 24:39.5.
Paul Hodges won the overall 3-K men’s walk with a time of 28:06.6, followed by Michael Filipek at 28:35.7 and Eric Floresca at 31:42.1.
The women’s 3-K walk was won by Sara Thornton with a time of 30:37.2, followed by Patricia McAtee at 31: 03.2 and Ashley Foresca at 31:43.1
“It was an amazing, most successful year for the 5th Annual Kevin O’Sullivan Classic 5k. The race has now generated nearly $14,000 dollars for Concord Five Aces Scholarship Fund at Concord University,” O’Sullivan said.
Local running groups including the Southern West Virginia Road Runners Club and the Pirates Pacers from Mercer Elementary were in attendance.
