FROSTBURG, MD. — In a game which was not decided until the end, the Concord University Mountain Lions defeated the Frostburg State Bobcats 23-22 at Frostburg ‘s Bobcat Stadium Saturday.
Concord (4-0, 3-0) scored first as Jack Mangel hit Cayden Chambers with an eight-yard scoring pass to end an 81-yard scoring drive on their first possession to make the score 6-0.
With 4:56 left in the first quarter, Mikey Rago hit a 22-yard field goal to make it 9-0 CU.
After a Frostburg score made it 9-6, the Mountain Lions went up 16-6 on the last play of the first half as Mangel threw a high pass to the end zone which was caught by Jarod Bowie for a 31-yard score. The scoring play was set up by a 21-yard reception by Kris Copeland two plays earlier.
The only scoring in the third quarter was a 35-yard field goal by the Bobcats (3-1, 2-1).
After Mangel made it 23-9 with a one-yard scoring plunge with 9:55 left in the game, FSU responded with a scoring drive of their own to make the score 23-16 with 3:48 left.
Following a CU drive which ended with a punt at midfield, Frostburg drove 88 yards with 1:18 remaining to make the score 23-22. A false start penalty scrapped their plans for a two-point conversion to win the game in regulation and a bad snap on the extra-point attempt to tie forced an unsuccessful scramble for the end zone.
CU was led by Mangel who went 38-42 for 354 yards , two passing touchdowns and a rushing one. Thurlow Wilkins had 87 yards rushing. Bowie caught 13 passes for 221 yards with a touchdown.
The defense, which limited the Bobcats to 310 total yards on offense, was led by Ty Maust who had nine tackles, 2.5 for loss, and a sack. Rashod Lusane and John Merica had five tackles each. Sayrend Musgrave and Phillip Russell each contributed a sack . The defense had seven tackles for loss.
Concord hosts Fairmont State for their Homecoming Game at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
