NEW ORLEANS — The Concord University men’s track and field team has landed four athletes on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Atlantic All-Region Team.
Seniors Damon Akers, Roger Foster and Jason Weitzel as well as sophomore Trevor Armes appeared on the list released Tuesday afternoon.
The quartet made the all-region team for their performance in the distance medley relay. Concord, Charleston and California (Pa.) were recognized as the all-region distance medley relays from the Atlantic Region. This past weekend, Akers, Armes, Foster and Weitzel ran a school record time of 10:06.70.
Akers and Weitzel were also all-region honorees for their work in individual events during the winter indoor track season. Akers clocked a school record of 1:53.92 in the 800-meter run at the Virginia Tech Challenge to register one of the five fastest 800-meters in the region.
Weitzel was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team in a trio of individual events, the mile run, the 3,000-meter run and 5,000-meter run. The Athens, West Virginia native set school records in the mile and 5,000-meters by running 4:16.83 for the mile at the VT Challenge. In early February, Weitzel clocked a time of 14:33.30 in the 5,000-meters at Grand Valley State. Weitzel’s 5,000-meter time was also a NCAA Provisional qualifying standard.
To make the USTFCCCA All-Region Team, a relay must have a top three time in the region or an individual have one of the top five times or distances in their respective event.
Concord begins the outdoor season Saturday at Charleston in the Golden Eagle Invite.
