The cultural war consuming America is about to claim the long-running team nickname of the Washington football team. I feel that it is time to change the name but changing the thought pattern of every one involved isn’t going to be easy.
Take team owner Dan Snyder, for instance. He was a “ride or die” person for the current nickname despite the 20 years of controversy about it. It’s only the push by team sponsors that will end the name Redskins.
As for the potentially replacement nicknames, Senators are associated with failed baseball teams and Generals are associated with being the perennial losers to the Harlem Globetrotters.
As for the NBA, the teams with a realistic shot of contention are reporting to Orlando,Fla., for training camp in preparation for the resumed season. I think that the Bucks and Lakers will meet in the NBA finals, but there will be plenty of competition especially for the latter.
As for baseball, there’s an element of uncertainty because of the long layoff.
