I’ve learned my lesson. I have been apparently ignorant on social issues, too ignorant to comment upon them. Fine, I can take a blatant hint and just stick to sports and let ESPN go on its merry way.

The Concord women’s basketball team has announced their schedule for next season, the first one under new head coach Tesla Southcott and assistant coaches Madison Heller, Tracy Griffith and Michael Bean.

Concord opens with a non-conference pair of games Nov 11-12 at Fairmont State, travels to Bluefield State on Nov. 16 and opens the home portion of its schedule with conference rival Charleston on Nov 19.

For those with a sense of history Nov. 23 sees UVa-Wise come to town. The Cavaliers were a MEC team and they are coached by former CU assistant coach Jamie Cluesman who played under former coach Kenny Osborne and was replaced by Southcott when she left for her current job.

Let’s go to the NFC South, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should still win the division and be a post-season factor. To give Tom Brady his due, he was great last year, it’s just that his revolving door approach to retirement rubs me the wrong way. The team should still be very good despite the losses along both lines.

The New Orleans Saints are also under new management. The main question for them is can Jameis Winston pick up where he left off due to injury. A return to form by Michael Thomas would help.

The worst part of the way that the majority of NFL teams handle young quarterbacks can be epitomized by the current roster of the Carolina Panthers with Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. Mayfield got dumped for an alleged serial sexual offender and Darnold had to deal with injury and a Jets team that has mishandled quarterbacks for most of its history.

I think the Matt Ryan deal will help both the Colts and the Atlanta Falcons. Ryan gets a fresh start which I think will work out and the Falcons can build around the draft picks obtained.
