PRINCETON — With the holiday season upon us, one couple is seeking out the most festively decorated storefront on Mercer Street.
Tom and Tonya Osborne are sponsoring the annual storefront decorating contest in downtown Princeton. With the community becoming more tight-knit every year, the Osborne’s are seeking for the holiday decorating tradition to be brought back in full force, prior to the Christmas parade.
Having sponsored the contest for 12 years, the pair annually seeks to bring back their childhood memories of glistening storefronts. Prior to his passing Tonya’s father would immaculately decorate his men’s wear clothing store window every holiday season, according to Tom.
“When he passed we wanted people to keep it up in his memory,” Tom said.
Though Tom isn’t originally from the area he can recount visiting Princeton in his childhood. During these trips, he remembers how packed Mercer Street was with shoppers and the lustrous festive decor.
“I was wanting to bring that kind of feeling back for the contest,” Tom said.
Judging for the contest will be on December 1, the day after the Princeton Christmas parade. To ensure that everyone who would like to participate is involved, the Osbornes ask that decorations be put up prior to the parade.
Decorations for the contest can follow any motif according to Tom, as long as its Christmas oriented. Judges will be walking down Mercer Street on December 1 to decide which business will win.
The prize includes a check to show the business “how much we appreciate them” Tom said. Once the winner is chosen the store owner will be contacted.
