Cabell Midlands’ junior running back Kasey Thomas ran for two scores and passed for another to help lift the Class AAA No. 1 Knights (9-0) to a convincing 42-7 victory over visiting Princeton (1-8) on Friday, Oct. 19.
Both of Thomas’ runs came in the first half, on runs of 20 and 8 yards, and the Knights exploded for 21 second quarter points en-route to a 28-0 halftime advantage.
The Knights’ David Gaydosz ran for 194 yards on just 12 totes and also reached paydirt once in the win. Thomas finished the night with 92 yards rushing on nine carries and connected with Tanner Chapman on a 18-yard touchdown pass with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter to close out the Knights’ scoring onslaught.
Princetons’ defense came out of the gates strong, holding the Knights on their opening drive, that started on its own 35 - and ended on the Tigers’ 35, after cornerback Devin Allen stuck Thomas for only a two-yard gain on a fourth-and-three.
The Tigers then took the ball and promptly drove to the Knights’ 22-yard line for a golden opportunity to score, but the attempt was spoiled after a botched snap on a 39-yard field goal try.
That seemed to open the flood gates for the Knights, as they proceeded to rack up 42 points and were threatening a shutout, until Allen broke free on a 55-yard jaunt with 10:19 to go in the contest to close out the games’ scoring.
Princetons’ defense put up a good fight throughout most of the first half, stopping the Knights on multiple possessions and kept up the staunch effort early in the second half, but after the Knights’ Lowell Farley scored on a 14-yard burst with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter, the ensuing kickoff was fumbled and recovered by the Knights and the turnover produced another touchdown just 40 seconds later.
The Tigers’ Allen was top performer, scoring the lone touchdown and also nearly broke a kickoff return (62 yards) in the second quarter.
Princeton hosts Greenbrier East (2-5-1), tonight, at 7:30 p.m. in its season finale.
