Concord's gridiron winning streak now three deep

PRINCETON — On Saturday, the Concord Mountain Lions extended their winning streak to three straight games and equaled last year’s record by defeating their hosts, the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, 23-16, at Buckhannon.

The Bobcats (3-8, 2-6) scored first as Kasper Bernild wrapped up a nine-play, 41-yard drive with a 26-yard field goal to make it 3-0 WVWC with 12:18 left in the first quarter. The drive featured a 19-yard run by Chase Blackwell on third and three.

Concord (7-4, 6-2) tied the score at 3-3 as Andy Ellington hit a 30-yard field goal with 10:05 left in the first to wrap up a six-play, 60-yard drive.

The next Concord scoring drive, which culminated in a one-yard scoring run by PikeView High School alumnus Ben Nester with 8:21 left in the first quarter, making it 10-3 Concord (Ellington kick) was set up by an interception of a Nate Montana pass by cornerback Riyahd Richardson who returned it 36 yards. Three plays and five yards later, Nester scored.

Concord went up 17-3 (Ellington kick) with 14:51 left in the half as Calvinaugh Jones rushed for a 22-yard score, ending a seven-play, 46-yard drive set up by a Nate Pollard interception and six-yard return of a Montana pass.

The Bobcats made it 17-10 (Berhild kick) as Montana hit Justin Heinauer with a 12-yard touchdown pass with 1:18 left in the half to wrap up a four-play, 42-yard drive.

Concord opened the second half with a nine-play, 61-yard drive which ended in a 35-yard Ellington field goal with 12:39 left in the third quarter, making the score 20-10.

The last Bobcat score of the day saw Montana hit Nyquan McGirt with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 3:09 left in the third quarter, making it 20-16 (kick missed). It wrapped up a seven-play, 56-yard drive.

Ellington ended the day’s scoring with a 33-yard field goal to wrap up a 13-play, 46-yard drive, making it 23-16 with 12:13 left in the game.

Concord was led by Jones who rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown in 25 attempts. Quarterback Evin Dusold went 20 of 35 for 233 yards. Ansel Ponder caught nine passes for 106 yards. Jake Lilly had 10 tackles, nine solo.

Wesleyan was led by Malcolm Yowk who rushed for 35 yards in seven attempts. Montana went 25 for 52 for 199 yards with two touchdowns ands two interceptions, McGirt had five catches for 36 yards and a touchdown. John Maddox had 12 tackles, nine solo and Jesse Robertson had 10 tackles, nine solo.
