From the December 12, 2003 Archives - Despite stories to the contrary, Princeton had no annexation plans

PRINCETON — City Manager Doug Freeman was scheduled to speak at the January County Commission meeting regarding a "mix-up" about annexation plans.

Despite several articles during several of the previous years, and quotes regarding annexation by Freeman, the City Manager responded to statements released by Nelson Short of the East River Volunteer Fire Department with, "[Short's statements] allude to an annexation plan here that does not exist. There is no annexation plan for the city of Princeton."

Short' remarked to county volunteer fire departments about what impact an annexation would mean to them by saying annexation, "will only affect the percentage payment from the Fire Board...Any annexation means loss of fire fee collection area that would equate to a loss in revenue. Departments could see a drastic decrease in their percentage payments due to loss of income from annexation."

Freeman said the statement amounted to a complete bashing of any prospects of annexation by a man who is employed by the county."

Freeman further stated that there was nothing on the record regarding annexation other than the council discussing the possibilities of annexation and the impact it would cause.
